The Learned Yoke

“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:29

Our Lord has two yokes or ways of bringing us into alignment with his will. Here Jesus is teaching us about the yoke of teaching or training that requires us to learn from him. It is not unusual for us to think of the struggle and brutality of discipline. The Jesus who fits us with his yoke of discipline is a gentle and humble Jesus. The sign over the workshop where Jesus crafts his yokes says, “Yokes that fit perfectly.” The test for the follower of Jesus is this: Will you trust your life to the master of yoke-building? If you do you will be rewarded not with sweat and tears but with rest for your soul. Do you want an inward rest that stands tall in face of life’s turmoil and stress? Put yourself into the Jesus’ school of yoke-bearing. – Ron Friesen
