Many followers of Jesus believe
that their calling is to focus on their human goodness, or holiness or even on
heaven and hell. While these are noble callings, they are not the primary
calling of a follower of Jesus. Our primary calling is to focus on the eternal
message of God’s Good News of the Cross. In the end the only reality is that
which God has done on the Cross. Our transformed lives or personal goodness is
the effect of receiving and living the message of the Cross; it is not the
cause of it. When we put our confidence in our human goodness, we will go under
when the testing comes. – Ron Friesen
