As I read the various comments on the social medium known
as Facebook, I notice how many people are searching for universal peace and
justice. It seems we are hardwired to seek peace and justice. It should not
surprise us that the ancient prophetic vision contained the same human
aspiration:
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the
government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his
government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and
over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish
this” (Isaiah 9:6-7).
How is peace brought to the world? God comes into the
world bringing all the qualities that guarantee justice and righteousness. For
followers of Jesus, this prophetic vision was fulfilled in the coming of the
Christ-child. Followers of Jesus know we live in the here and not yet in the
fulfillment of the prophetic vision. There is still a complete fulfillment of
these words of Isaiah awaiting our world. – Ron Friesen
