Focus! Focus!

It is common for many people to focus the minutiae, on the small points of a discussion. The human trait can be useful if we are flying an airplane or studying the particulars of a corner of the universe. When applied to human relationships, however, we can get lost in small details that distract from the main point of the conversation.

The early church found itself getting stuck on the small details of what does a follower of Jesus eat and drink. While focused on what is on the plate, they were missing the bigger issues of character. Here is what St. Paul said on this:

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17).

This nitpicking is all around us to this day. Watch the political news and folks are more concerned on what the President’s daughters are wearing than on what is going on in the policies related to food stamps in Congress. Go to church and after the service folks are talking about Sally Mae’s dress instead of the the message of God’s love they heard.

What would happen today if we focused on our character, on seeking peace and inner joy today instead of the smallest detail?
