God is not happy, well, at least according to the ancient
prophet, Isaiah. God is no respecter of nations: all of them come under his
judgment. Over and over again, much to the modern reader’s chagrin, God is
pouring out his judgment on all the earth. While God is unhappy with humankind,
God seems to have a special place for the animal kingdom. Cities are burning
up, kings turning into slaves, crops dying on the vine, and rivers are flowing
with blood, yet, nature carries on its life cycle:
“The owl will nest there and lay eggs, she will hatch
them, and care for her young under the shadow of her wings;
there also the
falcons will gather, each with its mate.” (Isaiah 34:15)
It is continually amazing how disasters cannot disrupt the
lifecycle of nature. There is a lesson here for us. Just as the owl and falcon
continue their cycle of new life through the birth of their young; so we, must
continue to carry on our lives in the middle of tragedy and disruption. Someone
asked Martin Luther what he would do if he knew the world was ending tomorrow.
He said, “I would plant a tree.” – Ron Friesen
