Some things never change. Like this reality: the arrogance
of humanity. The residents of Jerusalem believed that their special place in
the universe as God’s city protected them from any divine judgment. The ancient
prophet, Isaiah, was a wise social critic of his day. As he looked around he
noticed this arrogance on the part of his neighbors:
“You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought
to be like the clay!
Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘You
did not make me’?
Can the pot say to the potter, ‘You know nothing’?”
(Isaiah 29:16)
Who do we think we are anyways? There are many American
Christians who hold the same view of the United States of America today: we are
God’s city on the hill; we will never face divine judgment. Remember, “Pride
goes before the fall.” - Ron Friesen
