Today
is Father’s day in the United States and Canada. As I am reflecting on the
ancient prophetic vision of Isaiah these days, I thought I would see what
Isaiah said about God the Father. The best-known text is from Isaiah where the
prophet predicts the birth of a baby who will be called the Everlasting Father
(Isaiah 9:6).
There
is also this passage:
“But
you are our Father, though Abraham does not know us or Israel acknowledge us;
you, LORD, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is your name.” (Isaiah
63:16)
For
the Jewish people, Abraham was their father. Isaiah reminds the nation that
while Abraham might not recognize them as his descendants; God will always
acknowledge them as his children. Our earthly fathers may abandon us, abuse us,
ignore us, and disappoint us; our heavenly Father is a gracious Father who will
rescue us, forgive us, and abide with us. – Ron Friesen
