No Christ, No Christmas

Our televisions and email boxes are filled with ads about the ideal presents for the season. You would think that the coming days are all about shopping and more shopping. Stories about camping out for days before the stores headline the news.

Walking into the stores you hear some music about a white Christmas and a reindeer with a red nose. People grab at merchandise, fighting one another for the prized item What is this about?

If you were an alien from another planet you would wonder what strange place you had arrived at.

You inquire what this madness is about. You are told it is about giving gifts. Why are you scurrying around buying gifts? What is the reason to buy these gifts? We just do it, a few say. Then you find someone who says, "It is about THE Gift." "What GIFT?" "Well, people brought gifts to the manger for a baby who was God's gift." "What baby?" "The baby Jesus." "Why did they bring gifts to the baby?" "They came to honor and worship him." "Oh, I am confused. Are you standing in line to buy a gift for a baby?" "Oh, no, this is for my husband, and my son and myself."

Pondering these answers, you begin to wonder about what you are watching and hearing. People are scurrying about looking for gifts to give to their family and themselves because a baby was a gift from God. What if there was no gift from God?  - Ron Friesen
