We know we are multi-dimensional in our nature: physical,
mental, social, emotional and spiritual. Most of us make sure we take care of
our physical selves: we make sure we eat and sleep and even exercise. We care
for the mental side by reading books, enjoying a good conversation and doing
some thinking. Many of us make sure we cultivate relationships to meet our
social dimension. Through watching a funny show on television or listening to a
good joke and by treasuring friends we take care of our emotional side. A few
of us may also take care of our spiritual selves by practicing the disciplines
of reading spiritual literature, praying, meditating, worshipping, and serving
others. True balance means we practice all of these dimensions on a daily
basis. We would not think of only eating one day a week for one hour, yet that
is how many people nurture their inner being. Is it any wonder that our souls
hardly know what to do when the spiritual banquet is set before us? Just like
gorging ourselves after a week of fasting from food makes us physically ill, so
we become spiritually ill after we have a banquet of spiritual delights when we
have not feed our spirit. The secret to a healthy spiritual life is to nurture
it daily. What did you do for your spirit today? – Ron Friesen
