Just a breath away...

Prayer is defined as a conversation with God.

Sometimes we find ourselves in situations that are beyond words. We do not know what to say to God. St. Paul describes our difficulty this way:

We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God” (Romans 8:23-24).

I have a secret about prayer: prayer is not telling God what to do. Over the years I have heard many prayers. Many of them are in this line: “Heavenly Father, heal Mary’s big toe.” Or “God, give me a job.” These people treat God as if God is a heavenly sugar Daddy.

Prayer is moving into the presence of the Spirit of God. If we believe God is all around us then prayer is as simple as breathing. The Bible tells us that God hears before we ask. If this is so, then prayer is not getting God on our agenda, it is us getting on God’s agenda.
