Merton on "False Gods"

"For since man has decided to to occupy the place of God he has shown himself to be by far the blindest, and cruelest, and pettiest and most ridiculous of false gods."

- Thomas Merton, Raids on the Unspeakable, p. 61

  2. Maybe "God" should do something once in a while, sort of retain the title, so to speak, and "Man" wouldn't feel the urge to take his place. You think?

  3. That 7.2 off Fukashima yesterday and this hot weather is all God's work too.
But, the thankfully unneeded tsunami warning sirens that blared and my a/c
keeping me cool are all man's work. I know that God and science can co-exist.
The problem isn't with God - it is with
    man's interpretation of God's message.

  4. How does one discern "God's message" from a "forgery."
